What do I take to keep my illness and its symptoms under control?
Iron
Thankfully my body absorbs the pill form of iron to some extent because if it doesn't you have to get IV's of it pumped into your body. The average person with anemia takes 65 mg everyday, for some reason I don't absorb enough so I take 130 mg or two iron tablets. It's easy enough but iron can cause problems with your bowels so you also need to get a sufficient amount of fiber into your diet. |
Vitamin C
Vitamin C is essential to your body being able to absorb the iron vitamins. I take one tablet everyday as well as taking my vitamins with a glass of orange juice. ALSO, coffee cuts back the absorption of iron so I try to always take them in the middle of the day once I'm awake and my coffee intake is done. |
B12 Injections
This one totally depends on your body, it's more common for women to have a difficult time absorbing the pill form of the B12 pills. When I was first put on them my levels stayed exactly the same after three months on them. I give myself injections every two weeks, once again double the amount of the normal person. It's really not that bad giving yourself a shot. A lot of people swear up and down that B12 is a miracle for energy but it's been months and I still don't really see it that much. |
Magnesium
Magnesium is not for my anemia but for the migraines it causes instead. Before we diagnosed me with anemia and had just started looking into my migraines I made it very clear I did not want to be put on medication unless nothing else helped. Studies have tied magnesium and migraine together and honestly its been a huge help. I take 250 mg a day, people have said the rapid release is the form you should be taking but I've had great results just from taking the basic form. |
B2 (Riboflavin)
This one once again is also for my migraines, its been a huge help as well. Only complaint for this is it's very difficult to find especially in a dosage I need. I'm supposed to take 400 mg a day but it only comes in 100 mg form and even online I have only found it in one 100 tablet bottles. Walgreens GNC section does normally have them for buy one get one 50% of which helps. |
I am not a doctor, do not use my medical plan, I have circumstances where dosages and things have been changed to be specialized for me. If you require treatment for anemia or any other illness consult your doctor. I am simply sharing my experience.
